The Colonial Diner

colonial menuNJ is known for its diners, and with good reason. Bless this state for keeping so many of its classic diners in business (and in such good condition). Of all of the diners I have ever been to in Jersey the Colonial in Lyndhurst, NJ is by far my favorite. I have now been there almost times, (including twice in one day last month) and each time I seem to find another reason to love it. Regretfully, I haven't been able to take Jack there yet, but I'm planning on finding a reason to do it soon.

There's something Hopper-esque about this place. Everything is a little cramped, and everyone seems to be taking refuge from the outside world. Everytime I've been there I've gotten involved in a great conversation with a stranger over a cup of coffee. The waitresses are salty but kind. The chrome still gleems, the tile floor shines, and the neon tubes glowing brightly in the night are like a culinary beacon just beyond the Meadowlands. It's always open, and it's always packed. I always sit at the counter.

Early mornings, I like to sit and watch the guys behind the grill work their magic. They barely look up as they sling hash, pop different breads in the toaster, and flip omelettes and pancakes. At night sometimes I'll stop by for a slice of apple pie and a cup of good coffee. The food is always good and comforting, and cooked at a break-neck pace. If only they served black & white cookies it would be the perfect diner.
