The Miss Worcester Diner
Worcester Lunch Car Company: No. 812
For many years I’ve been waiting for the re-opening of this Diner. In its
heyday it was considered one of the best in the
Worcester area. It’s located just across the street from the now-defunct Worcester Dining Car Company, which built the
historic diners we Sebells love so much. We first heard it mentioned on Mike Barnicle’s radio program on 96.9fm years
ago. It closed in the last decade and was often rumored to be just about ready to re-open, but it always lay dormant.
Right around the time Jack was born I had heard that it was finally open. On our way home from Thanksgiving in CT we
had the opportunity to stop there. We were not disappointed.
We met the owner, who is incredibly friendly. She told us that her step-son had purchased the place but had been unable to run it full time. That being the case, she decided to take it over herself, and she and her husband sank over $40,000 into renovating it. Her money was well spent. It’s clean, comfortable. While the decor is vintage diner, it doesn’t have an ounce of retro-feel. It feels just like a diner should.

Our waitress, who works there on the weekends with her mother, could not have been nicer to us. Business was slow while we were there, so all three women played with Jack. They didn't seem to mind as he banged his spoon against the table, sang to the music on the radio, or spilled his gold fish crackers onto the floor. They were so sweet to him. As a treat he tried his first-ever grilled cheese sandwich. You can see from the photos he loved every bite of it. I had a tuna melt with tomato and onion rings. It’s a simple meal, but it’s often how I gauge a diner. The tuna salad was wonderful, having hints of onion and sweet pickle relish. Deena had a chicken parm sandwich and a frappe, both of which she loved.

This was Jack’s first trip to a classic diner, and it could not have been better. Bravo to the family that brought this classic back to life. We look forward to years of enjoy it.
