The Sherwood Diner

The Sherwood Diner is the most important diner of my life. My family ate there with some regularity, until the date of "the unpleasantness". Sadly, it is the site of my first major public fiasco -- when I got my 3-year old fingers stuck in a jammed table-top jukebox, which had to be destroyed in order to release my fingers. My family and I were summarily asked to leave and not return. I think it was the half hour of constant screaming and driving away the customers that so upset the owners.dinersSherwoodPlacemat

And then we moved away. A decade or so later I moved back to Westport for the summer. My buddy Gordon Novod and I spent countless nights driving around in his folks' wood-paneled station wagon, looking for the evening's party before it was shut down. Since the police almost always arrived on the scene before we did we often had to settle for a late-night rendezvous with friends at the Sherwood. Open 24/7, the Sherwood is a great Greek-style diner. The menu is longer than most screenplays, and has a perplexing variety of dishes from around the world. Every time I read it I wonder how they can possibly have chefs who know how to make this many meals, let alone have all of the requisite ingredients on hand to prepare them in under ten minutes.

I have yet to take Jack here. I will only do it if Nate and Sophie Mittleman can join us, as they grew up going there with me. I'm sure we'll be there soon.
